ARTEFACTOS/ARTIFACTS CLIMIGRANT’S SKETCHBOOK
The Plurinational Craft Council was conceived with the support of the Lois Roth Foundation with the aim to generate conversation and exchange between and within the indigenous nations of Ecuador. During this two-day multinational event, hosted in Siekoya Remolino, artisans and craftspeople from all across Ecuador conducted workshops where they shared their craft practices and traditional knowledge. Participants explored new tools for entrepreneurship, reflected on art as a form of cultural memory and storytelling, as well as built relationships across regions and generations. Council participants left with a shared knowledge of their craft, as well as the various cultural nuances that individually define their cultural communication through art.
This event focused on skill-building lectures, collaborative discussions, and opportunities to network. Including: a workshop from Keñao - a women’s entrepreneurial ceramic collective, a biological tour of the Siekoya territory, conversations with local sustainable chocolate business The Cacao Spirit along with Fundación Nukamp.
El Consejo Plurinacional de Artesanía se creó con el apoyo de la Fundación Lois Roth con el objetivo de generar diálogo e intercambio entre las naciones indígenas de Ecuador y dentro de ellas. Durante este evento multinacional de dos días, celebrado en Siekoya Remolino, artesanos y artesanas de todo Ecuador impartieron talleres en los que compartieron sus prácticas artesanales y sus conocimientos tradicionales. Los participantes exploraron nuevas herramientas para el emprendimiento, reflexionaron sobre el arte como forma de memoria cultural y narración de historias, y establecieron relaciones entre regiones y generaciones. Los participantes en el consejo se llevaron un conocimiento compartido de su artesanía, así como de los diversos matices culturales que definen individualmente su comunicación cultural a través del arte.
Este evento se centró en conferencias para el desarrollo de habilidades, debates colaborativos y oportunidades para establecer contactos. Entre otras cosas, se incluyó un taller de Keñao, un colectivo empresarial de mujeres ceramistas, una visita biológica al territorio de Siekoya y conversaciones con la empresa local de chocolate sostenible The Cacao Spirit, junto con la Fundación Nukamp.
Cultural technology is dying, not for a lack of knowledge, but for a lack of investment and solidarity in an increasingly more stimulating world. Craft education is seldom taught in schools, particularly those institutions far away from traditional villages where students are divorced from their community. By creating a multigenerational space to validate local knowledge, this council attempts to break the cycle in which indigeneity is slowly erased. Many artisans are protecting these practices in their own corners, it’s time they come together.
La tecnología cultural está desapareciendo, no por falta de conocimientos, sino por falta de inversión y solidaridad en un mundo cada vez más estimulante. La educación artesanal rara vez se imparte en las escuelas, especialmente en aquellas instituciones alejadas de las aldeas tradicionales, donde los estudiantes están separados de su comunidad. Al crear un espacio multigeneracional para validar los conocimientos locales, este consejo intenta romper el ciclo en el que la identidad indígena se va borrando poco a poco. Muchos artesanos protegen estas prácticas en sus propios rincones, es hora de que se unan.
